For your second paper draft, please again write about 200 words about the peer edit we did last week, or your writing process at present. As a reflection, think about how your writing is going so far, or what you like and don’t like. Was the peer edit helpful? What did you specifically learn from it? Course Paper Project for British Society & Literature 2

Topics already approved  (* Please, no more Higgins-Eliza proposals *)

  1. Pygmalion: Higgins doesn’t love Eliza; he sees her as his masterpiece.
  2. Pygmalion: It’s a good thing that Higgins and Eliza don’t get married, as Higgins would make a bad husband.
  3. Pygmalion: Eliza and Higgins see each other as a daughter and father relationship.
  4. Hitchhiker doesn’t reject the humanities if it has things like Vogon poetry and planet-building to find the meaning of life.
  5. Orient Express: Are there reasons for the ethnic stereotypes in the story?
  6. Hitchhiker: What does Marvin the robot say about the human essence?
  7. Orient Express: The passengers do the right thing in killing Ratchett.

Write an MLA format argument paper of about 800 words on one (or more) of the course texts: Pygmalion, Murder on the Orient Express, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, or a poem we studiedTry to discuss an issue or theme which explains the text(s); simply comparing two characters can be boring unless the comparison tells us something meaningful. Feel free to look at the blog questions or think about the presentations for ideas.

Due date, on paper: Wednesday, December 6 in class (no e-mails)

  1. The paper must state an argument with examples and reasons, focused on the text.
  2. It’s OK if you use evidence or history from the time period of the text to help explain it, so long as your emphasis is on the text. Do not write a paper which is really about your best friend or about K-Pop.
  3. The paper must directly quote from the text to prove your arguments. If your paper has three irrelevant quotes I will assume you didn’t read the text. Use short quotes rather than padding the paper with useless long quotes.
  4. Important!: Here is how the paper will work. You will e-mail me (keneckert @ hanyang. ac. kr) a 70+ word proposal, where you will describe what you are going to discuss and what question or argument you are going to answer or prove in your paper. You should do this soon, because: a) I won’t accept a paper without an accepted proposal; and b) once a proposal is accepted, no other student can write on the same argument. For this reason your proposal needs to be specific. I will reject vague, one-sentence proposals saying, e.g. “I will write about why x is bad.” How and why is he bad? How will you prove it?
  • Your second paper in this course will be a revision of this first paper, due on the last day of classes by e-mail (Sunday, December 17).
  • We will be spending four classes discussing how to write, research, and edit academic argument papers.
  • Refer to the “Files” heading on this site for an example of MLA formatting. We’ll discuss this in class as well.
  • Grading will be on four criteria: Grammar; structure; argumentation, and text support (quoting). Each draft is worth 15%.

  • Group 5:  Are there any meanings in the characters’ actions and words, which seem just random and absurd?
  • Group 6: Are there moral lessons that the author intends to teach to readers? What are they?

Your presentation must present an opinion or argument; it cannot just summarize the story. You must e-mail or speak to me before your presentation to have it approved.

  1. The book is silly, but are there any values that are taken seriously in it? What are they?
  2. There are few actual family or life-long relationships in the novel. What does the book say about family, or friendship?
  3. There is no racism or real discrimination against different species or life-forms in the novel. Why do you think this is so?
  4. Is it possible that the major events in the story aren’t random, but are somehow planned by the ship’s supercomputer? What do you think?
  5. Arthur Dent is a fairly normal, dull person in comparison to the strange people around him. Is this true? If so, why would the author write him this way?
  6. At several times Trillian feels sorry for Arthur and defends him or protects him. Why do you think she does this?
  7. What joke do you think the novel makes about governments, or the way organizations are run?
  8. There are hints in the book that Slartibartfast helps Arthur and the others to escape the mice and the police. Do you agree? Why might Slartibartfast do this?
  9. Does the book mean anything, or is it just fun? What messages does it try to teach?
  10. Choose another topic or theme in the book you feel is important. Why is it important?

  • Group 3: There are hints in the book that the World State inherently doesn’t work or has problems. What are they?
  • Group 4: Is it true that a society of only high intellectuals would be a disaster?

  1. Discuss satire and humor in Brave New World.
  2. Discuss the historical meaning of the character names (Marx, Lenina, Ford, Bernard [Shaw]). Why does Huxley use them?
  3. Most World State members are happy, though people like John, Bernard, and Helmholtz are not. Why? What is wrong with World State society?
  4. Are there things in life better than being happy? Why are they denied in the World State?
  5. Huxley once complained that a society where people were controlled through childish pleasures wasn’t much different from California! Do you think there are cultures now that are too much like the World State?
  6. Discuss how factory production (even of people) is depicted or satirized in the novel.
  7. The role of sex and love in the novel. Do you find the novel offensive? Why?
  8. Discuss the castes of people in the novel. Is it true that a society of only high intellectuals would be a disaster?
  9. Is John really more “free” in the savage reservation than the people in the cities?
  10. Is pain really necessary for the possibility of true happiness?

  1. Discuss the ending. Did the ending shock you?
  2. The plot changes quite a bit during the snowstorm when the train is stuck– what happens?
  3. M. Bouc and Dr. Constantine seem a little stupid compared to Poirot. Is this true? Why?
  4. Poirot relies mainly on psychology and logic to solve crimes. How is detective work different today? (Such as in TV shows like CSI).
  5. Are the characters likeable? Do you sympathize with any one of them more than others?
  6. Are the ethnic stereotypes simply a product of Christie’s time, or do you think she is making a statement by using them?
  7. Why was the story set on a train? Is there any symbolism to the train?
  8. Is the book funny in places? Are there any humorous characters?
  9. Does Ratchett deserve to be murdered? Are the people on the train wrong to do so?
  10. Does Poirot do the right thing in hiding what happened to the police?
