I’ve been to Bruges in Belgium twice, once in November 1998 and again in August 2012. Being more or less a medieval town fixed in the 15th century it didn’t change very much. It remains one of my favorite places in the world, filled with beautiful, windy brick roads and shops and museums, and beer, waffles and frites. We stayed in a wonderful B&B (Art & Soul) with breakfasts in a garden inside the house. People speak decent English and only an idiot could get lost. It still remains for me Europe on training wheels. If You Go: Bruges Relax. You’re going to like Bruges. It’s not exactly a party town, but there’s lots to see in the daytime. It’s walkable and safe and prices are sane. Take in a brewery tour. Borrow a bike and get lost. Ride on the tourist canal boat. Buy some junk at the flea markets. Eat some frites at the Markt. See the Beguinage nunnery. Look at the churches. Take a train to the coast (Ostende). Stuff yourself with chocolate. I have no warnings about Bruges! |
