Edmonton has always tried a little desperately to be a Big Important City, often being looked down on by Vancouver and Toronto, and even by its long-time rival upstart Calgary. Although I grew up there, I admit it’s not Paris, and it doesn’t give up its charms easily. But the river valley and parks are beautiful, there’s some attempt at interesting architecture, and there’s a really nice cluster of festivals crammed into the short summer. The city and people grow on you.
If You Go
Yes, you’ll want to do "the Mall," especially if you’re unlucky enough to be there in winter. But otherwise do see Fort Edmonton, wander around Jasper and Whyte Avenues, and ride across the bridge on the LRT. It’s a young city and not one that really holds on to its older buildings, but there are some. Generally the south side is nicer, my favorite section being the wider Whyte Avenue / University area. |
