Like Paris, Montreal gets a bad rap. There is some Gallic haughtiness, but it's mixed with Canadian politeness. Montreal can be a quirky city; walk down any main street downtown and there seems to be a cathedral on one side and a strip club on the other! But who cares? Grab some smoked meat and some Quebecois beer. Spend the afternoon arguing about politics at the cafe. Even though it’s Canada, everyone smokes. Simple pleasures.
If You Go
Again, if you try your best to speak a little French people will generally be fine with switching to English, though it helps to read some Francais on menus and signage. Montreal as of late has seen better days, so prices are fairly reasonable.
