Salzburg, Austria is a compact and very walkable city, particularly its antique downtown core. You can probably do most of it in a day, but it will be an awesome day of medieval architecture, fountains, some of the most spectacularly beautiful Baroque churches in Europe, and Mozart and The Sound of Music sites–all on the fringes of the Alps. There are probably cheaper locales to visit, but the beer is good, it's clean, and you'll definitely run down the charge on your digital camera.
If You Go
For a small city, Salzburg has an airport and is well-connected by train. Definitely take a stroll around the Mirabell gardens, where many of the connecting and song-and-dance shots of The Sound of Music were shot, and it looks like little has changed since then.
I found Salzburg's Mozart angle a bit kitschy, but some people might like it.
